In a current project I decided to use mostly surface mount components to cut down on the PCB size and have a cleaner looking circuit board. While specifying SMD parts from data sheets I needed a quick visual reference. Although the image does not contain the majority of packages I found it helpful in being able to determine whether I could hand-solder these tiny bits.
For a broader range of IC Pacakge Types check out http://www.siliconfareast.com/ic-package-types.htm. These two links were also helpful in parts and footprint creation within Eagle. An aspect of the CAD program that I was hesitant to undertake, but turned out to be quite easy once I made one or two of my own parts.
If you’re using eagle for PCB or Schematic development, download SparkFun’s footprint library. Whenever I need a part or foot print in Eagle I check here first. They have a lot of great little “hacks” for tricky pieces like headers and switches.
