I’m digging this project by Lauren McCarthy; a wearable conditioning device that measures an individual’s grin. To improve social interaction the cap prods the wearer with a metal spike to encourage smiling. A nice mix of crochet and subversive technology right up the alley of Design Noir.

I originally saw the video above several days ago and a came across it again via Gizmodo. Watch through to see the the field physically deform when placed against a surface, it’s especially neat. More at Touch; a research project in near field communications, and Berg.
I took a trip to American Science & Surplus here in Chicago and scored a few things. The store has a great collection of junk, of note is a Swiss military “branding kit” for marking army mules. Also; two wooden crate surplus radioactivity meters, several defunct traffic lights, large gear reduction motors, and loads of optical glassware.
